While recharging this past week, I purposely sought to be selfish and do things for me. Most would call this self-care, which I believe is a new word for simply taking care of ourselves. I would argue that it goes beyond taking care of myself. Sure, I indulged in a much needed haircut and massage but it is more, at least to me. Self-care is also about reconnecting with others and showing them that I’m thinking of them despite what’s going on in my life and theirs. In addition, I’ve come to appreciate sleeping in my old age. Not so much sleeping in, though I will say that it is awesome, rather making sure that I’m getting enough sleep. A good night’s rest can make a world of difference. When you’re younger, I didn’t understand or appreciate the value of it. Boy do I now!
This is part of my ongoing resolution to myself—to be selfish and do the things I love and want to do, whether or not others join me. Embracing the things I love to do, while thinking outside of the box so that it isn’t monetarily draining. I made this resolution last year, and I will continue it for this year.
2017 was a great start to accomplishing this promise to myself, but I realized that I have to be better about planning. More importantly, I need to stop making feeble excuses, like it’s raining or it’s too cold to be out, and forgive myself for not following through. At the end of the day, the point of all this is happiness and positivity. I need to remember that and not be so hard on myself.
What’s your resolution for 2018? Cheers to a new year!
